Back Doing DNS resolution can also happen via TCP, not just UDP.
If memory serves, TCP is used when the results are larger as when going after a google.com or some other site with a dozen IP's for a single name. UDP is used if for a typical one IP to one name.
Maybe your UDP is working but TCP isn't. Have you got TCP on port 53 firewalled?
