Back I know that While I worked at an ISP a few months ago - they had a redhat authentication and personal webpages server. We had at 1 point 17000 dial in customers, and all were authenticating off of the redhat box. Not all had shells, infact none but admins had shells, but they all could have an ftp account, and some personal webspace on the server.
BTW. Etc/password was bloody huge.

Does anyone have any experience with large numbers of Linux user accounts per single box?
How about 5,000 or 10,000 users in /etc/passwd?
If someone wanted a huge number of users on a box, what would be the preferred mechanism to employ?
