Back Good People-- Thanks for some great replies-- I'm off to try another fresh install while trying to make the best of everyone's advice.

By the way, someone asked about ColdFusion and kernel updates: It is my understanding from my research that the problem with the Verity search engine lies with glibc incompatibilities... i would think that if I have to compile with an newer kernel to get network drivers to work, I might be ok. we'll see.
