A friend of mine was having similar problems. He had configured redhat with X. After a few minutes, the machine locked up so hard there was only a hard reboot to get it going again. I took a look and found the sound card was not configured, so I ran sndconfig and it fixed the problem. Now you're both running servers, so I'm hoping this isn't relevant.
