2 things to check:
1) Make sure the dns server is running as expected outside of
the resolver - e.g. use nslookup or dig. If they fail there
may be a general connectivity problem or specific daemon issues.
2) Double check /etc/host.conf to make sure that bind is included
in the resolution path.
