[root@(protected) X11]# ls -l prefdm -rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 1380 Mar 1 2002 prefdm
it doesn't have an "l". this means...it's not pointing anywhere?

thank you!
however, the last time i tried to edit my iptables (with my paths messed up) i took down our intranet access to th www, because the iptables script couldn't find 'ifconfig'. i guess i will try that again, now that everything is great, when it doesn't matter if i have to reboot. now, i remember how this all started...something to do with my firewall...
thnx, vora
