It 's called a command prompt/shell. Boot into "safe mode " init 1
"boot single " from your boot loader

Try editing /etc/X11/XF86Config-4 and fine the line that says
Modes "1280x1024 " or similar
Change them down to say "1024x768 "
See if that helps
