Kernel doesn 't compile out of box. Config files not representative

Trying to compile the kernel is driving me nuts.

The config files in /usr/src/linux2.4/configs should represent the
configuation of the binary kernel right? Wrong!

I am trying to get the bttv and supporting modules installed because
they don 't seem to be anywhere under /lib/modules. However the config
files supplied with the kernel source suggest just about every module
ever invented is enabled. What gives?

Trying to just compile the kernel from source using the appropiate
config file 2.4.21-4.0.1.i686.ELsmp doens 't work, it bombs. Should I
expect it to compile?

Why is there such a difference between the supplied config and what I
actually have? Are there some extra binary RPMs out there to enable
bttv? I couldn 't find anything obvious.

Thanks,
SimonB
