  | | | Samba 3.0 broken with roaming profiles | Samba 3.0 broken with roaming profiles 2003-11-27 - By Jason Tackaberry
Back Hi,
I 've had a long day fighting with Samba and am ready now to throw myself off a building, so I apologize in advance for any obvious missing details in my description below.
I have setup RHEL AS 3 with the stock samba package (samba-3.0.0-14.3E) and a fresh install of Windows 2000 Pro. I am attempting to setup roaming profiles and I 'm not having the greatest luck. Please see my smb.conf attached.
When I log in to the W2k workstation, it authenticates fine, but when it tries to pull down the profile, Windows says:
Windows cannot locate your roaming profile and is attempting to log you in with your local profile. Changes to the profile will not be propagated to the server. DETAIL - The filename, directory name, or volume label syntax is incorrect.
The kicker is that if I fetch samba-2.2.8 and compile it myself, feed it the exact same smb.conf, it works like a charm. So clearly I 'm either missing some option needed for samba 3.0 and roaming profiles, or samba 3.0 is simply just broken.
The profile directory (/var/lib/samba/profile/proto) and all the files under it are world writable, to rule out any unix permissions issues. Also attached is the log excerpt (with debug level 3) between the time I authenticate and the W2K client gives me the above error.
I 'll run 2.2.8 on this server if I have to, but I 'd much rather stick with stock RHEL packages as much as possible. Desperately seeking advice. :)
Thanks, Jason.
