Back Does anyone else find it odd that Redhat wont provide 24x7 support on ES ? We are having major issues with the pricing of AS, given that we really only need ES, but we want 24x7 support. We cant even get support from someone like IBM for it as the "3rd level " which is suplied by Redhat is not there.
I think its definately time to look at SUSE 's support model. Redhat met with us (and we arent a small company by any means) and werent very flexable on their pricing, wont offer support on ES and generally were a little all over the place. I 'm finding it hard to support using Linux in the enterprise when Redhat wont come to the party. We wont purchase volume until were sure, and we wont get sure with their pricing. For some strange reason, management has decided that performance isnt being evaluated, just price. So a 4way Intel box is surprisingly with our discounts about the same as a 4 way sun box, but the Sun OS is free and we have an enterprise agreement with them. Microsoft is the same, the Os is free with our global agreement. So it turns out, compared to 2000/2003 Server and Solaris, Redhat is VERY expensive. we wont negotiate a contract because the pricing is WAY too high. Were stuck. i 'm frustrated. Redhats support model is wholely inadequate.
How are others doing support for Redhat ?.. how are you buying the OS ? RHN entitlements ? From what i can see so far if we want 24x7 support, we need AS and no matter who we buy that from its $2K+ per server. Hard to swallow when M$ and Solaris are "free ".
