  | | | kernel update pains | kernel update pains 2004-01-18 - By Alois Treindl
Back I use RHEL3 on a system with a fire-write external Maxtor drive as
backup disk.
To support this, I need the kernel modules ohci1394 and ieee1394
and these are provided by the rpm kernel-smp-unsupported-2.4.21-9.EL
(or whatever the current version number is).
When I update the system via up2date when there is a new kernel release
(as happened twice within the last two weeks), the kernel update
breaks the support of the firewire disk.
After each update of the kernel (and/or the kernel-unsupported part)
I have to run this command:
/sbin/new-kernel-pkg --mkinitrd --depmod --install [KERNEL VERSION,
e.g.2.4.21-9.ELsmp]
then reboot.
Only then I can use the kernel modules ohci1394 and ieee1394.
Question: Could not Redhat build the kernel update script inside the
rpms in such a way, that this is done automatically?
If not, why not?
