RHEL 3 migration problems

RHEL 3 migration problems

2004-01-29       - By Josh Kelley

 Back
I 'm working on migrating our servers from Red Hat 7.2 and 9 to RHEL 3
and keep running into problems. There are a number of packages and
features (vim-X11, sendmail-devel, sendmail-doc, mailman, mtx, arpwatch,
ReiserFS suport, ...) that I 've come to depend on for our servers that
have been removed from RHEL 3. I can build RPMs myself or install
software from source if I have to, but I 'd prefer not to have to do so,
especially now that I 'm using a non-gratis enterprise OS. I 've also run
into more problems with bugs or glitches in RHEL 3 than I 'm used to from
previous releases of RHL. For example, RHEL 3 's Amanda RPMs are
apparently compiled without Samba support, even though they claim to
offer it, and Samba support doesn 't work even if it is compiled in.
(I 've reported this on Bugzilla but haven 't heard anything back yet.)
As another example, the iptables-restore program is unable to restore
the default high security firewall from the Red Hat install, which
leaves your system without a firewall on boot. This problem was
reported to Red Hat, was fixed in unofficial RPMs, and then was
inexplicably marked as closed without ever releasing the RPMs on RHN
(see http://bugzilla.redhat.com/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=111999 ).

We purchased the academic edition of RHEL 3, so I don 't think that paid
support from Red Hat is an option on any of these issues.

So, with the above in mind, I guess I have a few questions. Does anyone
know if or where I could find the following information:
a list of packages removed from RHEL 3
rationales for packages ' removal from RHEL 3 and suggestions for
alternatives
information on migrating from RHL to RHEL, including info on the above
topics (Red Hat 's migration whitepaper is too vague to be useful here.)

Are there any sites that provide third-party RPMs for RHEL 3?

When reporting bugs to Red Hat 's Bugzilla, any idea what the average
time for a response is? Any idea when I could expect to see official
Red Hat RPMs to fix that iptables bug?

Apologies if this isn 't the right forum for this sort of topic or if
it 's already been discussed. Thank you for your time.
