autofs vs. autofs4?

Could someone explain to me what the deal is with autofs-3.1.7 included
in RHEL 3 and the autofs4 kernel module
/usr/src/linux-2.4.21-9.EL/fs/autofs4? How can I test autofs4? Do I
just add the /etc/modules.conf entry? Do I need additional autofs4
tools?

Thanks for any ideas. I need to see if autofs4 supports mount trees or
direct maps.

For example,

Mount Point:      Source:
/netapp/filer      filer:/
/netapp/filer/vol/site   filer:/vol/site
