In case anybody else has this problem, it turns out that someone installed
Perl 5.8 on the system and replaced /usr/bin/perl with the binary from 5.8.
We linked /usr/bin/perl to the version (5.6.1) that is installed with Red
Hat Enterprise Linux AS 2.1 and the printer configuration utility is now
working again.

Subject: Printer Configuration (printconf-gui) fails immediately after sta
rtup - may be due to Samba installation - RHAS 2.1

I just tried to configure a printer under Advanced Server 2.1 via the GUI.
The printer configuration dialogue box disappears immediately after opening.
I successfully configured a printer with the GUI awhile ago. The only things
I can think of that changed were:
   - I recently installed Samba
   - we upgraded to kernel version 2.4.9-e.24smp (I think from
2.4.9-e.21smp)

I have another AS 2.1 box where the printer configuration works OK. The box
where printconf fails has a /usr/local/lib/perl5 directory on it that
doesn 't exist on the box where it works. The failure seems to have something
to do with that directory.

Here is the error message that I get when I run "printconf-gui ":

I found a "Defaults.pm " file (
/usr/lib/perl5/site_perl/5.6.0/Foomatic/Defaults.pm) and tried to put it in
one of the directories specified in "$INC " above, but then got the same
error on other files.

I tried erasing Samba and the error persisted.

Help would be welcome.

Thanks.
