Shared memory and swap staying high

Shared memory and swap staying high

2004-02-12       - By Percent, Lonnie M.

 Back
Hi all,

AS2.1 2.4.9-e.25smp
4GB ram 4 Xeons 4 70GB dirves RAID 1/0

Progress 9.1d database. i am running init 3

shmmax was set to 33554432
Yesterday I increased it to 134217728 for better database buffering

i ran a process that had to use swap. it finished but swap was never
cleared.
i took down the database and still swap was never cleared.

this morning with no database server running - just barebones processes
all of swap being used and alot of shared memory too.

i then rebooted . top showed everything cleared and 0k swap .

i am not sure what to make of this. it seems to me
that when swap is no longer being used it would show 0k used.
also shared memory stayed high and memory used stayed high.

is this normal behavior for this kernel? should i expect to see these
figures never decrease once they increase? is this just a flaw in the
top reporting?

any input would be greatly appreciated.
