Are you sure the /opt link was created?
If you do:
cd /
ls -l
the relevant line should look some thing like this:
lrwx -rx -rx root root ... opt - > /home/opt
If it starts with
drwx the ln command did not succeed.
In that case do:
cd /
rm -rf opt
and repeate the ln command:
ln -s /home/opt /opt
