hotplug usb problems with kernel 2.6.x

I upgraded to kernel 2.6 recently, and certain USB devices don't work
anymore.  I followed the directions at the following well-known links:

http://www.fearthecow.net/index.pl?section=guest&page=kernel
http://thomer.com/linux/migrate-to-2.6.html

I just moved up to 2.6.2 and module-init-tools-3.0-pre9, and I'm having
the same problems.  I have CONFIG_HOTPLUG=y in my kernel config, and
changed /proc/ksysms to /proc/kallsyms in /etc/rc.sysinit per the
instructions.  While my USB mouse and keyboard are great, I get the
following when I plug in my Archos Jukebox Recorder:

Feb 14 16:47:52 cantara kernel: hub 1-0:1.0: new USB device on port 5, assigned
address 5
Feb 14 16:47:53 cantara kernel: usb 1-5: Product: ARCHOS USB2.0 (P4a)
Feb 14 16:47:53 cantara kernel: usb 1-5: Manufacturer: ARCHOS
Feb 14 16:47:53 cantara kernel: usb 1-5: SerialNumber: wwww.archos.comA
Feb 14 16:47:53 cantara /etc/hotplug/usb.agent: Bad USB agent invocation
Feb 14 16:47:56 cantara /etc/hotplug/usb.agent: ... no modules for USB product
5ab/60/1101

Trying "mount /dev/sda5 /mnt/usb" gives me "mount: /dev/sda5 is not a
valid block device".  When I unplug it, I get:

Feb 14 16:48:46 cantara kernel: usb 1-5: USB disconnect, address 5
Feb 14 16:48:46 cantara kernel: updfstab: numerical sysctl 1 23 is obsolete.
Feb 14 16:48:46 cantara /etc/hotplug/usb.agent: Bad USB agent invocation
Feb 14 16:48:46 cantara modprobe: FATAL: Module ide_probe_mod not found.
Feb 14 16:48:46 cantara modprobe: FATAL: Module ide_probe not found.
Feb 14 16:48:46 cantara devlabel: devlabel service started/restarted

Everything else regarding 2.6.2 works beautifully.  Similarly for my new
iPod 40 Gig, connected via the FireWire to USB cable, I get:

Feb 14 16:55:33 cantara kernel: hub 4-0:1.0: new USB device on port 1, assigned

And on disconnect, I get:
