Did you try Arjan's build for 2.6 and related utils?
Did the new hotplug scripts help?

I'm still using the older hotplu scripts, but haven't had trouble with
my USB CD-R/W and Arjan's 2.6 kernels.

Since this worked in 2.4, what driver was used?
Give you mount command, I'm guessing usb-storage.

usb.agent is failing. So the driver isn't getting loaded.
Look at /etc/hotplug.d/default.hotplug. Enable the debug code near the
beginning to see how usb.agent is getting called.

There's a similar line in /etc/hotplug/usb.agent that would help too.
I see a few place that would give that message, so it may help to see
where it's comming from.

Oh yeah, do you have sysfs mounted on /sys ?

The ide_probe and ide_probe_mod confuses me but it's probably related to
the usb.agent problem.

| Everything else regarding 2.6.2 works beautifully.  Similarly for my new
| iPod 40 Gig, connected via the FireWire to USB cable, I get:

Looks the same at the other one.

assigned address 3
| Feb 14 16:55:34 cantara kernel: usb 4-1: device not accepting address

This is interesting. I wonder what hub-4 is. My guess is the
firewire->USB conversion.
