No... I downloaded the kernel source from kernel.org.

I'll try it tonight from home, where my home box has 2.4. At work I'm still using 2.6.

I don't have a /etc/hotplug.d directory, and "locate default.hotplug" doesn't find that either. Presumably these are part of the new hotplug scripts which you mention, but which I've never heard of.
