No. You jsut start the app you want to run on the remote machine.

GNOME is a desktop environment, and would be running on the local machine.

If you want a full desktop on the other machine, VNC is the way to go.

But why would you? Either way you need X running on the local machine to
handle the display from the other machine. No need to run an extra
Xserver on the remote machine.
