Booting Problems while Upgrading to 2.6.2

Hello everyone,

i have rhl 9(2.4.20-6) ..i tried upgrading to 2.6.2 but while booting i get
the following error message:

mount: error 19 mounting ext3
pivot-root: pivot_root(/sysroot, /sysroot/initrd) failed: 2
umount /initrd/proc failed: 2
Freeing unused kernel memory: 232 free
Kernel panic: No init found. Try passing init= option to kernel

This is what i have

1)my initrd dir is empty
2)have compiled ext3 in kernel and not as  a module.
3)tried passing init=/bin/bash at boot prompt as mentioned in some sites.
but it doesnt help.

other websites mention about ditching  initrd in kernel configuration.
tried disabling the support ..recompiled the kernel and now it gets stuck at
this error

VFS cannot open root device "LABEL=/"  or unknown-block(0,0)
Please append a correct "root="  boot option
Kernel panic :VFS:unable to mount root fs on unknown-block(0,0)

can anyone help ? im a newbie

regards
chet
