yup you can 't compile 2.6 kernels with gcc 2.96 basically.
Also expect a really painful experience even when you do mange to get a
kernel build; the as2.1 userspace isn 't adjusted to 2.6 at all...
(it might work for some stuff but generally I expect a lot of subtle
things to just fall appart)
