chkconfig does NOT lock you into using it to manage the startup of your
scripts. It 's a tool that was created so you don 't have to make all
those symlinks in the /etc/rc?.d/ directories. It does it for you!
Seeing as you can 't figure out where to put the symlinks yourself
(after a day of manpaging it), why don 't you give up and let the
utility do it for you?

Do others on the list also use chkconfig? Am I alone in finding a
great tool to simplify a tedious job? Or am I simply wrong, that
chkconfig is NOT the best tool for his problem. I 'd like to have a
final put up or shut up on this thread- please mod me up or throw me
down- I 'm just here to learn best practices.

hth,
Jurvis LaSalle

ps what is up with the strange formatting of your emails Lonnie? what
character set are you using and why are you using it when posting to
the list?
