Back Hi all,
We are trying to get a hard disk hooked up via usb working properly. I have it
setup so that when it is plugged in devlabel finds it and configures it. The
problem is when I try to write large amounts of data to it the load on the
machine slowly climbs and when it gets to about 6.5 the machine locks hard.
Since I was seeing the load stuck @ 1 on an idle machine and kswapd in an
uninterruptable sleep, I have tried setting /proc/sys/vm/inactive_clean_percent
to 33, 50 and 100. Although with it set to 100 it takes longer to lock the
machine it will still lock. With top set to refresh every 2 seconds is not
appear to be swapping.
The machine is a Dell P3 600 server (I forget the actual model) with 256 Megs
of memory.
Is there anything else I can look at to try to troubleshoot this?
Is anyone else seeing this kind of thing with USB storage devices? Since
this machine is 3 or so years old I suspect it has a usb 1.0 interface in it,
Would adding a USB 2.0 interface possibly help this? For puropses of this
problem is there really any difference between 1 usb 1.0 interface and a 2.0
besides speed??
I am not sure what other info to provide, so if someone needs some other info
I would be glad to provide it.
Regards,
Tom
