Linux Kernel Update

Hello all,

I 'm currently trying to roll out some EL 3.0 boxes for use against a
NetApp filer (FAS 270c to be specific). I 'm seeing extremely poor
performance compared to what I 'm being told it should be - as well as
what NetApp thinks it should be. From what I 'm understanding from
various conversations with NetApp engineers there is multiple problems
with the 3.0 NFS implementation and Update 2 is supposed to fix this.
They seem to be indicating that there 's something new coming out in
Update 2 that is going to fix this, including a fix for O_DIRECT
issues. They 've referenced RedHat bugzilla number 117216 but that
appears to be an unauthorized bug number for non-RH people. I 've tried
pointing the two boxes at each other and done some benchmarking and
performance seems to be less then I was expecting there as well.

I 'm using RHEL 3.0 update 1 with dual broadcom GigE NICs (using the
bcm5700 driver) in a 802.3ad link aggregate situation. Box boxes are
P4-3000 Xeon CPUs with 2Gb of RAM. So I have plenty of hardware and
network to throw at the problem.

I guess I have several questions that I 'm hoping someone on this list
can answer:

1) Is there known performance problems with Update 1 and if so is there
a fix in the works? Is there anyway to get an advanced copy of the
kernel package and/or nfsutils to see if this solves my problem (I 'm
sure everyone hates this question)?

2) Is there further "high-performance " tweaking that can be done to NFS
clients? I 've tried various adjustments with rmem_max and wmem_max for
the networok stack. I 've also played with various setups of udp, tcp,
wsize and rsize.

3) What are "good " numbers other people have seen going up against
hard-core NFS servers like a NetApp? Running iozone against the Netapp
seems to be orders of magnitude slower than against local disks when
from my understanding going against a box like a NetApp should be
pretty close in performance.

Thanks in advance everyone!
