If you are running an Intel P2 or newer, and the package in question is available for both i386 and i686, always use the i686 one. In most cases this will give you better performance and in some rare cases it's the only one that will work properly for you.
I _think_ rpm will refuse to install an i686 package on an i586 machine, but I have never tried it because it would break things horribly :-)
