Thanks for the replies Mark and Ken.
That worked like a champ.

I 've set up 5 ftp users, and made their home directory as follows.

user1
/var/ftp/user1

user2
/var/ftp/user2

What I want is to make an incoming folder in their user folder for which to
place uploads. I want to restrict upload access to their incoming folder.
I 'm still learning all about permissions in Linux. I just need to change
their root folder to r-x to make it so they cannot upload there? And have
their incoming folder drwx?

Also is it safe to delete the .kde, .bash* stuff in their home folder as
well? Since they won 't have login privileges, I shouldn 't need it, and this
will clean up their home folder?

Lastly, to make this quite complicated, a user on the local lan needs to
have samba access to /var/ftp/ 'customers '.

I 'm not strong with the permissions and the samba setup for that, but I
would make a group called ftpsite and change the permissions on the users
folders to allow the group full access? And the samba configuration I would
force group on the files that they place there to be able to be read by the
ftpuser? That would get the lan user able to access the customers folders
and place and read files? I 'm leery with FTP as I 've always heard that it is
a big hole in your network, so I want to keep things tight.
