I just upgraded a server from rh7.2 to rhel3. I 'm trying to restore the
/etc/passwd, shadow and group files back to /etc.
When I restore the passwd file, I can 't log on with my user account or root:


ssh servername
Connection closed by ipaddress.x.x.x

when I copy the put the passwd file back to the newly built one, I can
log on. I 've done this before, I believe.

I 'm I missing a step?
I don 't see anything out of the ordinary in /var/log/messages
