Back Does anyone have any experience using the Promise FastTrak S150 SX4 SATA
controller with the sata_sx4 driver in RHEL 3 U3?
We just received our first SATA equipped machine using the above
controller and two Maxtor 7Y250M0 drives. I selected the controller
based on a mailing list posting I found from Jeff Garzik while
researching SATA controllers & Linux compatibility which made the SX4
seem like a good controller with RHEL support coming in RHEL 3 Update 2.
I tried installing RHEL 3 U3 on it first with both, then one of the
drives connected and it would not complete. I finally got the install
done by disconnecting the SATA drives (they weren 't intended to be boot
drives anyway). However, when trying to boot the system with either
drive reconnected results in the system hanging without any error
message after "Activating Logical Volumes ".
I 've tried it both without creating any FastTrak managed volumes and
with a RAID-1 volume with similar results although ultimately I just
want to use the Linux software RAID.
Here is a sample of the error message I got in the RHEL 3 U3
installation:
<3 >ata2: command timeout
<4 >SCSI2: ERROR on channel 0, id 0, lun 0, CDB: 0x28 00 00 00 00 00 00
00 08 00
<4 > Current sd08:30: sns= 70 3
<4 > ASC=11 ASCQ= 4
<4 > Raw sense data: 0x70 0x00 0x03 0x00 0x00 0x00 0x00 0x06 0x00 0x00
0x00 0x00 0x11 0x04
<4 > I/O Error: dev 08:30, sector 0
That exact message (aside from device number changes depending on which
drive) appeared multiple times during the loading of sata_sx4 and when
(I think) anaconda was doing a partition scan.
I also tried RHEL 4 Beta 2 on the system and had similar problems.
Any ideas?
Sean
