i 've installed 3 systems in the past few days (rhel3 U3 + plus all
current updates) that will not authenticate against on our nis servers.
they claim to be bound to the correct yp domain. ypcat passwd/group
works fine. authconfig says it is using nis. but any authentication
request for nis users fail. /etc/pwdb.conf is also correct.

on some older redhats (maybe 7.2,7.3?) we used to have to
edit /etc/pam/system-auth and change all instances of unix to pwdb
before a machine would authenticate. i tried this as well, and no luck.

i distinctly remember installing some U2 servers and having them
authenticate against yp without issue. has anyone else noticed a change
since u3?

i thought i saw info about this before, but searching the list archives
brought up a bunch of hits from last february.
