Many apologies... the failure to boot had nothing to do with the up2date run.
The /initrd directory had gotten deleted a couple of days ago and no one here (myself included) realized that the /initrd directory was a crucial part of the boot process. Restoring it returned the system to perfect working order.
I've been at this since RHL 4.1 and I still find I'm learning new things about how the boot-up process works...
Again, sorry for any false alarm.
