No, I think I overlooked something. You can use alsamixer, a Curses-based TUI or amixer, its command-line brother. There are other ALSA-specific tools like aplay and arecord. xmixer relies on the old /dev/* devices that were provided by the OSS sound stuff. If you want to use your old OSS tools, add these lines to your /etc/modprobe.conf:
# These are for ALSA OSS emulation. alias sound-service-0-0 snd-mixer-oss alias sound-service-0-1 snd-seq-oss alias sound-service-0-3 snd-pcm-oss alias sound-service-0-8 snd-seq-oss alias sound-service-0-12 snd-pcm-oss
Just between you and me, I'm not nuts about this rocky transition from OSS to ALSA.
