Go ahead and upgrade if you can. I'm running FC2 one one of my K6-3s, and FC1 on the other only because I haven't gotten around to taking it offline to upgrade it.

Every install or upgrade from CDs writes a log in /root. After it fails, boot with the CD into rescue mode (put "linux rescue" at the boot: prompt), let it mount your system on /mnt/sysimage, then
cd /mnt/sysimage/root ls less install.log # or upgrade.log, if that's what you're doing
When done, just "exit" and it will reboot.
