Time Synch Between RHL9 and XP Pro 2005-01-04 - By Wayne Watson

After having to scramble with some new problems after installing SP2 on XP Pro,
I
think I'm a little closer to getting to my original goal of sending a time
synch from
the XP machine to the Linux machine.
The Linux machine also is capable of booting up in W2k. If I do that, I can
send a
"net time" command from W2k to the XP box to get set the W2k machine's time
properly.
In other words, the connection between the two machines seems OK.
I've installed Samba 2.2.7 with SWAT and webmin on the Linux box. I have a
pretty
minimal smb.conf file. I can only get SWAT via port 10000 through webmin. It
won't
fire up with 192.168.0.3 (the IP address of the XP machine). To get Samba
running
properly, I probably have to create some same accounts on both machines. I
haven't
done that yet, and am not entirely sure how to do it. I use XP exclusively as
Administrator. Probably I need to use the XP guest account, and a Linux guest
account
with the same pwds.
In reading some tome on the web about Samba, it mentions that server time in
the
globals section needs to be set to yes for time synch. I was able to do that
through
webmin and SWAT. I could have just edited smb.conf.
That's where things stand at the moment. What's next? Create an account on
Linux for
guest? What command do I sent to XP to get the Linux time set? I can only hope
it's
that simple.
