As it happens (in my experience anyway) FC3 is at least reasonably intelligent
with labels - it will detect if another partition already uses (for example)
LABEL=/ and if so it should label your / filesystem /1 instead...
I've dual installed serveral times over and it has always managed this.

your method is definitely safer, though.
