Kernel 2.4.21-27.0.1.EL kernel is not very old, I think December 2004. You can be sure it works with the rest of RHEL 3.0
Do NOT compile a http://www.kernel.org for using on RHEL. there are many features and patches in RHEL kernels which are not in the official kernels. An important change is the threads mechanism, AFAIK.
Just reboot to the older kernl via grub or lilo, either by manual change of the config file or by user interaction on the boot screen, if you have access to that, i.e. the machine is not remote.
