SCSI LTO II Tape drive : I/O errors

SCSI LTO II Tape drive : I/O errors

2005-01-10       - By Jacques Beja

 Back
Hi everyone,

Just bought an external LTO 2 tape Drive (DELL Powervault 114T).
My problem is I can't dump on it :

Dump shows :

# /sbin/dump -0 -f /dev/st0 /data/
DUMP: Date of this level 0 dump: Wed Dec 29 15:34:05 2004
 DUMP: Dumping /dev/sdb1 (/data (dir /pvcsdata)) to /dev/st0
DUMP: Added inode 8 to exclude list (journal inode)
DUMP: Added inode 7 to exclude list (resize inode)
 DUMP: Label: /pvcsdata
DUMP: mapping (Pass I) [regular files]
 DUMP: mapping (Pass II) [directories]
 DUMP: estimated 18397192 tape blocks.
DUMP: Volume 1 started with block 1 at: Wed Dec 29 15:36:50 2004
 DUMP: dumping (Pass III) [directories]
DUMP: write error 8040 blocks into volume 1: Input/output error
DUMP: Do you want to rewrite this volume?: ("yes" or "no") no
DUMP: Do you want to start the next tape?: ("yes" or "no") no
DUMP: The ENTIRE dump is aborted.

and /var/log/messages shows :

kernel: st0: Error with sense data: Current st09:00: sense key Aborded Command
kernel: Additional sens indicates Data phase error

Using tar command leads to same result :/

The mt status command get a correct answer :

#mt -f /dev/st0 status
SCSI 2 tape drive:
File number=0, block number=0, partition=0
Tape block size 0 bytes. Density code 0x42 (no translation).
Soft error count since last status=0
General status bits on (41010000):
BOT ONLINE IM_REP_EN

My kernel version is 2.4.21-20.ELsmp and the driver used is aic7xxx. I have
tried using a 1k, 8k, 64K blocksize without success.
Also tried to read the tape using dd and it's working :
#mt -f /dev/st0 rewind
#dd if=/dev/st0 of=/tmp/test bs=10k
99+0 enregistrements lus.
99+0 enregistrements ??crits

I have also tried to update the kernel to the last version available on the RHN
but no success.

Anyone got an idea ?
