While, based on your description, I would probably agree that it is not related to the isolated hangs that you were seeing in the pre-U4 kernels I did want to mention the following:
Assuming your talking about the random NFS hang that has been haunting RHEL3 since the beginning, it is true that a fix for this problem is included in U4, however, the fix (really more of a workaround) is not enabled by default. You must configure your module to be loaded with an extra parameter to actually activate the "fix". I assume you may already know this, but I thought I would mention it because just this week I've has to colleagues who experienced this problem with the U4 kernel because they though "U4 included the fix" but didn't realize it required an extra configuration option to actually activate the fix.
To implement the fix for the NFS hang you must add something like the following to your modules.conf file:
options nfs nfs3_acl_max_entries=256
Also, earlier the week there was a report of NFS hangs when talking to Sun NFS servers (I think) and, while the problem description wasn't exactly the same, he mentioned that setting nfs3_acl_max_entries=0, which I would guess basically disables ACL support, worked around his issue. Might be worth trying.
Just some random thoughts.
Later, Tom
