is not optim 2005-01-21 - By Tommy Davis
Back Hi,
The aacraid driver in RHEL3 U4 have problems with RAID arrays that are not optimal. Read on for a solution and some bits about the performance and monitoring of Adaptec 2130SLP RAID controller.
Last week we got a couple of servers built upon Intel Jarrell SE7520JR2 serverboards and Adaptec 2130SLP Raid controllers. Two RAID 1 arrays were configured in each server
After initializing the arrays, I proceeded to install RHEL. While the array was building the installer would consistently freeze the machine soon after anaconda was started.
When the arrays were finished being built, RHEL3 installed fine. To test the array I pulled out a disk when the server was running normally. It immediately became unresposive (no network either) and continually printed the following message on the screen: Queue 6 full, 0 outstanding Queue 6 full, 0 outstanding Queue 6 full, 0 outstanding Queue 6 full, 0 outstanding ..... . ..... . ...........
After a hard reset the machine booted fine, but the same thing as described above happened just after the login prompt was shown. No messages were written to the syslog regardin the crash. When the array was rebuilt, everything worked again, and the server ran without problems.
After trying to pinpoint the problem I downloaded version 1.1.5-2371 of the driver from www.adaptec.com and rebuilt the kernel + module. The new driver works as expected and faulty disks doesn't bring down the server and can be replaced without taking down the server.
Monitoring og Adaptec 2130SLP ============================= Regarding monitoring of the raid status, the included aaccli command line utility works fine. You can control most aspects of the controller and script it nicely. Ex:
[]# aaccli open aac0 : container list /full=true -- ---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ---- --- ---- Adaptec SATA/SCSI RAID Controller Command Line Interface Copyright 1998-2004 Adaptec, Inc. All rights reserved -- ---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ---- --
Executing: open "aac0"
Executing: container list /full=TRUE Num Total Oth Stripe Scsi Partition Creation Label Type Size Ctr Size Usage C:ID:L Offset:Size State RO Lk Task Done% Ent Date Time -- -- -- --- -- --- --- -- --- -- ---- -- --- -- ---- ----- -- ---- -- -- -- ---- -- --- --- -- --- -- ----- 0 Mirror 34.1GB Open 0:00:0 64.0KB:34.1GB Normal 0 011705 19:51:06 /dev/sda Array 1 0:01:0 64.0KB:34.1GB Normal 1 011705 19:51:06
1 Mirror 34.1GB Open 0:03:0 64.0KB:34.1GB Normal 0 011705 19:52:29 /dev/sdb Array 2 0:02:0 64.0KB:34.1GB Normal 1 011705 19:52:29
Performance og Adaptec 2130SLP ============================== Performancewise the controller performs well with our applications. hdparm reports the following:
[]# hdparm -tT /dev/sdb
/dev/sdb: Timing buffer-cache reads: 2824 MB in 2.00 seconds = 1412.00 MB/sec Timing buffered disk reads: 124 MB in 3.00 seconds = 41.33 MB/sec
How that does compare to other setups I don't know, but I would be interested to find out.
