Can not get sound card to work with RHEL 3

I just installed RHEL 3 on a Dell Optiplex GX280 (Intel P4 2.8GHz) and ran
into problems with the sound.

Using 2.4.21-27.0.2.ELsmp kernel, I was not able to get any sound, either
from audio cds, web pages, etc.

Switching to the up kernel provided very poor sound from web pages, but no
sound from the audio cd.

I also tried to install an ALSA driver.  This improved the sound from web
pages dramatically, but still no sound from audio cds.

The gnome cd player recognizes the audio tracks and it thinks it is
playing, but there's no sound.  I checked the volume settings to make sure
that they were up all the way.  I also used alsamixer to verify the volume
settings after I had loaded the ALSA driver.

lspci shows the system to have Multimedia audio controller: Intel Corp.
82801FB/FBM/FR/FW/FRW (ICH6 Family) AC'97 Audio Controller (rev 03)

/etc/modules.conf was properly configured for the i810_audio module, and
is now configured for the ALSA modules.  In both cases, lsmod indicated
that all of the modules were loading okay.

So the bottom line is that I have no sound with the smp kernel, poor sound
with the up kernel and i810_audio but no sound with audio cds, and good
sound with ALSA but still no audio cds.

Does anyone have any suggestions, with or without the ALSA driver, on what
might be wrong?

Thanks!
-Roger
