up2date RPM package conflict error

When trying to run up2date, I get the following failure:

up2date -u

Fetching Obsoletes list for channel: rhel-i386-es-3...

Testing package set / solving RPM inter-dependencies...

RPM package conflict error. The message was:
Test install failed because of package conflicts:
package xerces-j-2.2.1-11 is already installed


Any suggestions on how I can fix this and why it is trying to install a
package that it already has installed?
