Bob,
In our auto.master file on Linux, we add global options that get added
to each entry in our auto.indirect file.
/auto /etc/auto.indirect rsize=32768,wsize=32768,tcp
Maybe you can add tcp on your Linux auto.master. BTW, Solaris uses NFS
over TCP by default and has for a while (Solaris 2.5.1 or 2.6, I
believe).
