Providing updated patches and providing support are separate issues in
my mind at least.  You mean to tell me that none of the code in
kernel-unsupported has been touched since RHEL3 gold?  I do of course,
understand RedHat's reasons for having kernel-unsupported, in my case
though, I pull updates from RHN automatically and recompiling the 3rd
party driver each time means more downtime and no unattended reboots at
4am and that's if I actually realize the kernel's been updated, it
really mucks things up when I don't notice a kernel update, a week goes
by, the server gets rebooted by another admin (who doesn't do Linux) and
the NIC is suddenly unsupported by the new kernel.  This is of course
all my problem and not RedHat's, heck it's academic licenses so there's
only kernel-unsupported for me :)  I solved this issue in a few boxes by
upgrading to RHEL4 where sk98lin is updated (and supported apparently)
but a few boxes were a pain to setup with RHEL3 (dumb vendors that still
live in the RH7.3 days) and I have no desire to try their code on RHEL4
anytime soon. Maybe I'll see if I can throw a e1000 in those boxes
sometime. What is the RHEL4 solution in place of kernel-unsupported?

The problem here is that sk98lin is not supported. If we add support for
newer cards to that driver, it implies that we're, well, supporting it.

Thats not to say that it won't happen (its not my call), but it
certainly sets bad precedent for other requested fixes to
kernel-unsupported, and is one of the reasons that RHEL 4 doesn't have a
kernel-unsupported.
