In this instance (char-major-10-209), are you referring the device
/dev/compaq/cpqrid Compaq Remote Insight Driver (Non-serial mice)?

These numbers are the numeric references to "devices" in the system,
usually represented as /dev/xxx in the filesystem.  Have a look at
/usr/share/doc/MAKEDEV-3.3.12.3/devices.txt.
