If you're using the MS windows environment (e.g. directories are mounted in
samba) - check out Beyond Compare by scooter software  Great utility!

You may be interested in a bi-directional directory synchronizer.  Have
a look at Unison ( http://www.cis.upenn.edu/~bcpierce/unison/).  I've not
used it, but it's on my list of things to investigate.

Some google searching led me to these directory comparison tools:

http://kdiff3.sourceforge.net/

There are probably others, but these should get you started.
