I got Oracle Calendar running on RHEL3 using the instructions here:

http://www.dartmouth.edu/~angus/instructions/oc.html

I've not found it to be overkill at all.  Setting it up is a bit of a
pain but it runs quite nicely on an old dual-550mhz box for 150
faculty/staff.  It has clients for Win32/Mac/Linux and Solaris.  It has
synch agents for Pocket and Palm PC devices (only calendar solution I
know of that offers both w/ no additional cost).  It has a web interface
and email integration.  It also provides a nice scalable solution should
you ever decide to move up to Oracle's full Collaboration Suite which
does voicemail/email/fax/filesharing/calendaring all tied together.
