Back Why should I do that way? Is it supposed to be x86_64 distro for EM64T machines?

you need to use the ia32e kernel on em64t machines, you cannot use the x86_64 kernel in rhel3 for this. up2date is supposed to have given you the right kernel! Did it not do that??
