in that case the right answer is the i686 kernel.

there is a HUGE difference between a 32 bit and a 64 bit distribution, even
though you can use either one on your em64t machine. What you can't do is
pick parts of the 64 bit distro and use it on the 32 bit distribution
though... so either you want a 32 bit distro (and in that case the i686
kernels are right for you) or you want the 64 bit distro (in which case the
ia32e kernels are right for you).
