I also have this problem with openoffice running on RHEL AS v3.

All of the dependencies listed by up2date are installed as x86_64 versions and
no i386 versions of these packages are installed.

Openoffice is currently installed from i386 packages and is working using the
x86_64 dependencies. So I do not want to duplicate the x86_64 packages with
i386 packages unless it is required.

Is there any documentation around describing the way x86_64 and i386 packages
interact as these types of errors seem to occur regularly.

Just checked again and mozilla seems to have joined the list.
