XFree86 Errors

Has any one seen this error before??

'Could not init font path element unix/:7100, removing from list
Fatal server error: Could not open default font "fixed"'

I get the above error when I try to start X. I get the Nvidia signon
screen then that error. I have gone and reinstalled ALL the XFfree86
components and checked for lock files etc and I still get this error.
I'd like to get it running so that I can back the system up and install
RHEL4. But until I backup the system I can't do that. I've googled for
that error, and what had turned up didn't work for me. I need to get
some stuff which is in the KDE desktop and heaps of other stuff. This
system had been up and running for a while, so there's heaps of data to
backup before I can trash it. This has been the first real problem that
I've had with it. It's been running great otherwise.

Wolf

PS: I know RH9 is old, which is why I want to update it. But before I
can, I need to back it up.
